About Viable Gear - Strength from the Sea
Viable Gear is a women-led, mission-driven startup building the next generation of materials. We’ve developed a patent-pending, marine- and soil-compostable bioplastic made from seaweed—designed to replace petroleum-based plastics at scale and reshape the global plastics economy with materials that work with the planet, not against it. The urgency is undeniable: nearly 400 million metric tons of plastic are produced each year, much of it persisting for centuries, while microplastics are now found in our air, water, soils, food systems—and the human body—signaling a systemic failure of conventional materials. Viable Gear offers a better path forward.
After years of R&D, powered by more than $1M in non-dilutive capital, we are now at a critical inflection point. We’re raising funds to bring our pilot product to market and unlock our next phase of growth. To reach that milestone, we're targeting a final $300K. Rather than accept premature dilution or risk stalling in the “valley of death” that sidelines so many breakthrough ventures, we are approaching this raise with the same creativity that defines our company—leveraging non-traditional capital sources, including donor-advised fund dollars and other mission-aligned pathways, to bridge to launch.

Ocean Catalysts: Funding the Future Beneath the Surface
What if seaweed could help replace petroleum-based plastics, restore ocean ecosystems, and transform everyday consumer products? In this episode of Catalytic Capital, host Ken Kurtzig speaks with Katie Weiler, founder and CEO of Viable Gear, and Justin MacNaughton, co-founder of 4Kelp Skincare. Katie shares how Viable Gear is turning seaweed into SeaTwine—a marine-degradable, compostable alternative to plastic twine used in agriculture and aquaculture. Justin explains how 4Kelp is developing clean, kelp-powered skincare in plastic-free, home-compostable packaging while supporting kelp restoration and ocean advocacy. They discuss the science behind seaweed-based materials, the challenge of competing with inexpensive conventional products, the journey from an ambitious idea to a market-ready product, and why patient, mission-aligned capital is essential for building a more regenerative economy.
