About Calla Lily Clinical Care
Calla Lily Clinical Care is a British women’s health startup that has developed the proprietary Callavid® platform for intravaginal drugs. Vaginal drug delivery allows for targeted therapy without systemic side effects or painful injections. However, the existing methods of delivery are deeply flawed. Leakage causes dosage uncertainty and in some cases women are asked to lie down for an hour or more with every dose. For example, progesterone for infertility is very effective given vaginally. However, women in the United States are often prescribed extremely painful "PIO" or progesterone in oil injections. The outcomes are no different. But the injections can cause pain, bruising and infection.
Callavid® is a device that incorporates a drug into the platform in a bespoke manner to ensure appropriate drug delivery with selective absorption of only the inactive ingredients and associated leakage. These include therapies targeting endometriosis, menopause, gynecological cancer and more. The company's initial use case is for the delivery of progesterone to target indications in fertility and pregnancy.
The founders are a well-matched team. Dr. Lara Zibners is a physician, educator, author and business leader with personal lived-patient experience of IVF and both vaginal and injected progesterone. Her co-founder, Thang Vo-Ta, is a former Goldman Sachs investment banker and recognized women's health entrepreneur. They are supported by a robust team of scientists, drug-device experts, engineers and product developers. The team is further backed by world-renowned experts in fertility, recurrent miscarriage, pharmaceutical development and non-dilutive funding from the NIHR and Innovate UK. The money being raised is to complement a $1.3M NIHR (UK's National Institute for Health and Care Research) grant to complete its clinical study and seek both MHRA (UK regulatory) and FDA approval.
